Welcome to Year 6!

Welcome to a brand-new school year! We are delighted to begin our final year of primary school together and are looking forward to an exciting and memorable year ahead.

On this page, you will find everything you need to keep up to date with what we are learning each term, as well as important reminders, weekly spellings, homework activities and other useful information.

Year 6 is a very special year, filled with new challenges, exciting learning opportunities and plenty of opportunities to celebrate how far our children have come. We can't wait to see them grow in confidence, independence and resilience as they prepare for the next chapter of their journey.

Year 6 routines:

  • PE Days: Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Children will take 2 reading books home- one is linked to their level of development and the other is a reading for pleasure book. Books can only be changed when they have been read and PageTicker has been updated. Please bring books in every day so that children can read in school and to an adult when appropriate.
  • Spellings are on the school website. They will be assessed each Friday.
  • Water bottles must be brought to school each day.
  • Healthy snack- fruit or toast only for break time (toast paid for via parent pay)
  • School gates open at 8:40 and playground door at 8:45. Registration is at 8:50am. From 8:50-9:00, children complete start of day activities (SODA) linked to their learning and to settle them into the day.
  • No pencil cases from home are necessary, all equipment needed will be provided.

What We Are Learning This Term:

We have lots of exciting learning planned for Year 6 this term! Take a look below to find out what we will be learning across the curriculum.

📚 English
We will be studying King Kong, exploring the characters, setting and language used within the text. We will then use our creativity to write our very own alternative ending to the story.

📖 Guided Reading
During Guided Reading, we will explore the classic text Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. We will develop our reading skills, build our vocabulary and explore the themes and characters within the story.

🔢 Maths
In Maths, we will be developing our arithmetic skills and strengthening our understanding of integers, decimal numbers and place value. We will also be practising rounding numbers and applying our mathematical knowledge to a range of reasoning problems. 

🔬 Science
In Science, we will be investigating forces and learning about living things. We will explore how forces affect objects and develop our understanding of the world around us.

🏺 History
Our History topics will take us back in time to explore the fascinating Maya civilisation and the Shang Dynasty. We will investigate how these civilisations lived, their achievements and their impact on the world.

🌍 Geography
In Geography, we will be learning about biomes and vegetation belts. We will explore different environments around the world and investigate how climate and location influence the plants and animals that live there.

 PE
In PE, we will develop our skills through dance and ball games, focusing on teamwork, coordination, movement and sporting skills.

💻 Computing
In Computing, we will be learning about computer systems and networks, developing our understanding of how computers communicate and how networks work.

✝️ Religious Education
In RE, we will be exploring Christianity, developing our understanding of Christian beliefs, values and traditions.

As always we will continue to develop our creative brains with weekly music and French lessons and our Art and Design Technology week.
