Year 5 - Mrs Wallace 2025 - 2026

Mrs Speed

Hello, and welcome back to school! My name is Mrs Wallace, and I am delighted to be teaching Year 5 this year. I have received such a warm and friendly welcome from both the staff and the children, and I am really looking forward to the year ahead. We have lots of exciting learning planned, and I can’t wait to see the children grow in confidence and achieve their very best.

In Year 5, we are very lucky to have a great team working with us. Mrs Christian and Ms Farrell will be supporting our class, and Mrs Gargan will be covering PPA on Monday and Wednesday mornings. Together, we will make sure the children have the best possible support and opportunities to shine.

This autumn term will be packed full of exciting learning and new experiences. In English, we will begin with an incredible book called Queen of the Falls. We’ll be focusing on diary entries, exploring Annie’s daring feat, and discussing how she might have been feeling throughout her journey. In Guided Reading, we will enjoy Kensuke’s Kingdom, an amazing adventure story that I’m sure we will thoroughly enjoy together!

In Maths, we will begin by consolidating our place value knowledge, starting with 5-digit numbers before moving on to 6-digit numbers. We will then develop our skills in addition and subtraction, making sure we can use these methods confidently and securely. Our Geography lessons will focus on map work, while in History we will step back in time to explore the fascinating Stone Age period.

 Y5 Class Information

PE Kit
Please make sure that all PE kit items are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Water Bottles
Please ensure your child brings a water bottle to school each day.

Reading
Children will take home two reading books: one matched to their reading level to support their development, and another chosen as a reading for pleasure book. Books and planners should be brought into school every day. Once a book has been read and a parent/guardian has signed the planner, the book will be changed.

Planners
Please sign your child’s planner at the end of every week. Planners will be checked on a Monday and signed by the teacher on a designated day.

Homework
Homework will consist of a research question linked to the current learning in school. This will be available on the school website.

Spellings
Spellings will be given out on a Monday and tested on a Friday. They are also available on the school website.

Snacks and Toast
Children can have a healthy snack or toast at break time. Toast can be paid for via the ParentPay app.

Stationery
Children do not need to bring in their own stationery as this is all provided by the school. Just remember to bring in planners and reading books each day.

Daily Routine

  • Gates open at 8:40am and the playground door opens at 8:45am.
  • Registration is at 8:50am, where children also take part in a Start of the Day Activity (SODA), which is linked to learning and helps settle the children.

I am really looking forward to working with this class and creating a fun, engaging, and fulfilling learning environment for all the children this year.
