Year 5: Miss Owen 2023 - 2024
Miss Owen
Welcome back to school after the summer holidays. I hope everyone has had a lovely break and is looking forward to being back.
In year 5 we have lots of exciting things coming up.
We start of our maths with place value where we will look at numbers up to 6 digits. This will be followed with reminding ourselves or our addition and subtraction strategies and solving lots of word problems and reasoning. As you all know I like maths so hopefully we'll have time for some maths games along the way. At the start of every maths lesson we will do 5 a day and a reaosning question to get our brains started and also to help with our speed PEand fluency.
In English we start off with The Lost Giraffe which is a video unit. This will allow us to write a lovely narrative and set of instructions for keeping a giraffe safe. After this we move onto one of my favourite texts 'Kensuke's Kingdom'. A fantastic adventure book which will have you on the edge of your seat till the very end asking yourself lots of questions. We will start off guided reading with Kensuke Kingdom before delving into the world of the legend that is Robin Hood.
In History we travel back in time to the Stone Age. From here we travel through the bronze age and finally into the Iron Age. Geography will be map work and climate zones to help our map and atlas skills. Science is materials and their properties so lots of experiments to do!
Year 5 will also get to visit Clontor Opera Theatre which is an amazing trip to learn all about the theatre. As part of our stone age topic we will have a workshop in school where hopefully the stone age will be brought to life!
For our 1st Art week will look at the work of Vivienne Westwood. Look out for an e mail asking for a plain white t shirt.
PE days will be Wednesday and Friday
I'm really looking forward to teaching you all this year and that we all have a fabulous time in year 5!
