Year 1: Miss Richmond 2023 - 2024
Year One: Mrs Richmond 2022 - 2023
Hello and welcome to our class page.
I am Miss Richmond and I am the Year 1 teacher.
We have PE days on Thursday and Friday, please ensure PE kits are in school. We will send them home at the end of each half term for them to be washed.
In KS1 we have three different books that are sent home.
Reading for Pleasure books – these are sent home on Monday and returned on Friday. These are books that are to be shared as a family, at bed time, before tea or just snuggled up on the sofa.
RWI books – these are sent home on Monday and returned on Friday. These are phonetically plausible books that are chosen specific in line with your child’s phonic knowledge.
Phonetically decodable or banded reading books – these are changed every Tuesday and Friday. Don’t worry about reading a full book each day, reading a couple of pages each day will be great. Please just make a note of which page you have read up to.
In English we will be exploring the authors by Alexis Deacon (Beegu) and Oliver Jeffers (How to Catch a Star). We will be looking at how to retell a narrative, story maps, setting descriptions and how to write a recount. We will begin to look at non fiction texts, focusing on instructions. We will also be looking at rhyming words in poetry.
In Maths we will be looking at shape and patterns. We will be learning how to identify, describe, sort, and classify 2-D and 3-D shapes, investigate repeating patterns and to follow instructional and positional language.
In Science we will be learning about the weather and everyday materials.
In History we will be stepping back in time to learn about Neil Armstrong and the moon landing.
In Geography we will be learning about costal towns in the United Kingdom.
In RE we will be continuing to learn about Christianity, focusing on the question ‘Why is Jesus special to Christians?’.
In Music we will be focusing on the style of reggae, learning the songs ‘Rhythm in the Way We Walk’ and ‘The Banana Rap’.
In PSHE we will be thinking about how we respect ourselves and others, as well as our physical health and mental wellbeing.
In addition to reading daily, we have Rainbow Challenges for KS1. These are challenges set for each half term. The first Red Rainbow Challenge has six different activities for you to complete before the end of term. Please take pictures of you completing each activity and add it onto School Spider (Rainbow Challenges Red Autumn 1). I can't wait to see the photos of what you have been getting up to! If you have completed most of these challenges before the end of term, you will earn your Red Rainbow Certificate.
