Year 5/6 - Miss Owen 2025 - 2026

Miss Owen

I hope everyone has had a lovely Easter break.

As we start our final term in year 5/6 - I can't believe how fast the year has gone- we will continue to focus on becoming independent, organised learners and taking ownership of our own attitudes to learning so we can be the best we can be!  This includes remembering our reading book and planner daily, organising our own belongings throughout the day and listening and contributing in lessons when it is appropriate  The motto 'don't get stressed, just try your best', continues and is so important as we move through this important next stage of our education.

Working with me is Miss Farrell, Mrs Stewert.  Mrs Gargan and Mrs Tarbuck, who will cover my PPA and subject time each Thursday morning. They will all help us to continue our love of learning- even when things get tough.

During this term, we will cover a lot of learning and experiences. In English, we will continue with our information book The Brilliant Deep looking at coral reefs.   In guided reading, we will start with a poem called 'If' by Rudyard Kipling before starting the one you've all been waiting for Room 13. I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

In maths we wiil finish off  fractions, decimals and percentages. You have worked so hard so far and realised that you can do it, so I'm sure this confidence will continue as we bring in percentage of amounts.  In history, we continue our new topic which includes the history of trains, Liverpool and beginning with our local area of Rainhill and Prescot. In Geography we start looking at North America and using our fieldwork skills including sketches, measuring rainfall and temperature.

Also not forgetting some revision for year 6 before they take on their key stage 2 tests. I know they will absolutely try their best on them all!

Another busy but enjoyable term ahead!

Don't forget the doxy dosh shop where good behaviour means prizes! Will you spend or save?

Year 5/6 routines:

  • PE Pe days are Monday and Thursday with swimming being on the Thursday this half term
  • Please put names inside all clothing and shoes
  • Children will take 2 reading books home- one is linked to their level of development and the other is a reading for pleasure book. Books can only be changed when they have been read and a parent has signed the planner. Please bring books in every day so that children can read in school and to an adult when appropriate.
  • Please sign your child’s planner at the end of every week. This will be checked each Monday morning and signed by the teacher on a designated day.
  • Homework will be set and uploaded to the website. These will consist of research questions based on the children's current learning in school
  • Spellings will go home each Monday and will be assessed each Friday. There is also a copy on the class page. Please note year 6 now have 20 weekly spellings
  • Water bottles must be brought to school each day
  • Healthy snack or toast for break time (toast paid for via parent pay)
  • School gates open at 8:40 and playground door at 8:45. Registration is at 8:50am. When children arrive, they complete start of day activities (SODA) linked to their learning and to settle them into the day.
  • Children do not need to bring their own pencil cases, pens, pencils etc as all resources are provided. They just need to remember their planner and reading book.

I am looking forward to once again teaching you all as I know we will learn lots and have some laughs along the way.
